What is the role of pheromones, nutraceuticals and drugs in management of behavioural cases?

  • Sarah Heath BVSc DipECAWBM(BM) CCAB MRCVS, RCVS and European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine (Companion Animals)

The management of behavioural medicine cases relies on a multifactorial approach. The most important thing is to determine the underlying emotional motivation for the behaviour and then implement a programme based on altering that emotion and subsequently the animal’s behavioural response. In addition to behavioural modification based on learning theory it is also helpful to consider adjunctive therapy in the form of pheromones, nutraceuticals and medication.
