Appointments
In order to remain under our veterinary care, it is practice policy that we see your pet every 6 months. Please contact a member of the administration team to organise a veterinary consultation. If we are prescribing medication for your pet and your appointment is overdue, we will not be able to dispense further medication until your pet has been seen by one of our vets. If this is the case, we will discuss the medication with your GP vets who should be able to dispense the medication for you.
If you wish to make an appointment with one of our vets, please contact the administration team who will be able to book this in for you.
If you would like to book a rehabilitation appointment for your pet, please contact the rehabilitation team.
If you fail to attend an appointment without informing us of cancelling, a cancellation fee will be charged. Please refer to your appointment letter for the fee.
If you need to a cancel an appointment with less than 48 hours’ notice, a cancellation fee will be charged. Please refer to your appointment letter for the fee. If you would like to reschedule your appointment with more than 48 hours’ notice, please contact the office for vet consultations and the rehab team for rehabilitation appointments.
Our sessions are hands off, and therefore the coaches will not be touching your pet (unless coming for a veterinary physiotherapy session), and we want for your dog to remember the session if techniques have been taught. Therefore, we would suggest not giving the animal the medication. The session will be tailored to your dogs emotional state during the session, if the dog appears to no longer cope with the activity then we will adjust the session.
If you have concerns about other dogs being at Oak Bank Stables, please discuss this with a member of the team prior to your appointment. Oak Bank Stables is a secure and controlled environment, and the team discuss at the start of the day the areas they are planning on using so dogs do not see each other.
A selection of high value treats cut into very small pieces, for example a minimum of 4 pieces should be able to fit on your middle fingernail. e.g. chicken, cheese or hotdog.
Rehabilitation follow up appointments are taken place at our practical rehabilitation centre, Oak Bank Stables.

The rehabilitation skills coaches will be happy to help with any queries you may have. We can organise a 15 minute call with a member of the rehabilitation team to be able to help you in the meantime.
During the initial consultation:
- We explain why your pets unwanted behaviour is happening (by describing the emotions driving your pets unwanted behaviour).
- We will discuss how we interpret animal body language to give you the tools to understand and help your pet, so that their behaviour can improve.
- We will outline a plan that we will support you in implementing, that can begin the work to improve your pet’s behaviour. Very frequently, there are several phases to the work that we need to do to help our patients. The first stage is often groundwork which sets them up for success to improve in the specific context that they have been referred for.
General
Unfortunately, we are unable to advise on specific companies or individuals, however we would suggest discussing your dog’s needs with the organisation to ensure that they can offer support to your dog as needed. It can also be useful to visit the establishment prior to leaving your dog there, and then book in for a trial stay to see whether their care best supports your dog’s needs.
We do not have a set success rate; each case is specific to the individual and therefor cannot create data on the success. As each animal is an individual, their emotional capacity ranges and therefore some animals may be able to show improvements a lot quicker compared to others. With some animals, there may never be a ‘fix’ it may be a case of management for the rest of the animals life.
Once your pet has been signed back to your GP, they will no longer be under our care and will be under the sole care of your GP. This means that we will no longer be able to prescribe/advise on medication for your pet or offer veterinary advice.
You can still have rehabilitation appointments once your pet has been signed back to your GP vet. If at a later date you would like veterinary advice from one of our vets, we do not require a new referral to be submitted if it has been less than 12 months. We will require an up-to-date medical history from your GP vets, and we will schedule a veterinary consultation to restart your programme.

Implementing programmes often take months to implement depending on the animals emotional state, and therefore we are here to support you through the duration of your time with us. The rehabilitation skills coaches will be your first point of contact for any clinical queries.
If you feel that your case is urgent, please discuss this with your GP vet. If they also feel that your case is urgent, please request they email the office to advise this, and we will process your referral as soon as we can to make sure you start getting support.
Once your GP vets have referred your pet to BRVP, a member of the administration team will contact you directly. Depending on the volume of referrals we have at the time, this can take up to a few months. We will request for a questionnaire to be completed, and for videos to be sent. Once we have received this information, we can organise an appointment. We book up appointments a few months in advance, so we encourage for this information to be returned as soon as possible.
Medications
In the first instance, please contact your GP veterinary practice. If you require to speak to a member of our team, please contact the office on 01244377365.
Medication can be reorder via our website. https://behaviouralreferrals.co.uk/repeat-prescription/
If the medication is a human drug, written prescriptions can be used at a human pharmacy. If the medication is an animal drug, written prescriptions can be used on an online pet pharmacy.
Once the vet has prescribed medication the administrator team will contact you to discuss the costs. If we are claiming through your insurance, we will submit a continuation claim. Once we have had confirmation that you are happy for the medication to be dispensed, we will post these out to you via Royal Mail special delivery. Some of the medication that is prescribed is a cascade drug, and therefore we require a form to be completed – this will be emailed to you once the medication has been dispensed.

If you have a question in regards to your dogs medication, please advise the rehabilitation or administration team, who will be able to get a response from one of our vets. If you have an urgent question, please contact your GP vets as we may not be able to get a response from one of our vets straight away.
Re-Referrals
If you feel that another dog in your household may need support, please discuss this with the rehabilitation team. If it has been agreed/advised that this would be beneficial, we would require a referral from your GP vets. As the vet will already have some understanding of the other dog, then a 2 hour consultation will be organised, rather than the 3 hour initial consultation you have already had regarding your other dog.
Of course, as your pet has been signed off from our care we require a new referral and up to date medical history from your GP vet and we will then organise a consultation with one of our vets. Once this consultation has taken place, we can continue the programme with your pet.
